RIFF

The Southland Musicians Club aka now ‘RIFF in Invercargill has been a huge part of the local music scene for over 30 years. Based at The Rhythm Lounge on Preston Street, it’s a welcoming space where musicians and music lovers come together to enjoy live gigs, open mic nights, and special events like the annual Guitar Legends showcase.

Southland Musicians Club aka ‘RIFF’, 33 Preston, Invercargill - Logo redesign.

When designing the logo for Riff, I wanted to create something that visually captures who they are: a bold, genre-fluid music club that brings people together through sound. The concept started with two key ideas — the repeat bar from sheet music and the aux cord, (used in their original branding) — both powerful symbols of connection and rhythm.

The repeat bar reflects Riff’s deep roots in music culture, evoking the idea of loops, rhythm, and music’s cyclical nature. The aux cord represents modern listening and how music connects us today — from one device, one person, one sound, to another.

Together, these elements form a logo that’s clean, confident, and instantly recognizable. It’s not tied to one style or sound, just like Riff. It’s a symbol of repetition, flow, and connection — all central to what Riff stands for: music that keeps playing, spaces that stay open, and a community that’s always plugged in.
